Electrical BIM Detailing: Cable Tray Design Best Practices

Image
A cable tray that looks correct on screen does not always behave correctly on site. Installers routinely discover that a modeled tray run cannot physically accept the bend radius of a medium-voltage cable, or that the clearance above a tray was never checked against maintenance access rules. These are not rare mistakes. They happen because cable tray detailing sits at the intersection of geometry, fill capacity math, and code compliance, and getting one piece wrong without catching it early tends to delay the entire rough-in phase.  For firms coordinating complex MEP scopes, this is exactly where Revit cable tray modeling needs to do more than represent a tray as a simple extruded shape. The Problem With Treating Cable Trays as Generic Geometry Many electrical models still treat cable trays as straightforward linear elements, sized once and left alone. That approach ignores how differently a tray behaves once real cable loads, fill percentages, and bend transitions enter the pi...
